Inscribed: At lower right, in white: “92.’. On back of canvas, in pencil: “Copia/ de Rafael Sanzio’.
Provenance: Museum of the former Board of Commerce
Note: Despite the quadrangular dimensions of the stretcher, the composition is oval. It is the pair to the work of the same title (inv. no. 984).
The number “92” which this painting bears, corresponds to the number of the Catáleg de 1833. It is recorded in the Catàlegs de 1833 and 1837 as a work by Salvator Rosa although from the Catalog de 1847 onwards it is ascribed to an unknown artist. The reference to Raphael in the inscription on the back of the canvas seems to have no ground neither for the work's composition nor for its handling. On loan to the MFMB (inv. 3006), until came back to the Academy on September 29, 2009. |
