|Inscribed: On stretcher, on label of the Academy, in ink: “Núm. ant. desconocido/ Núm. mod. 253/ La Cenci”; on two modern stick-on labels, in ink: “5”.
Provenance: It might well be the “Chenchi” by Francesc Lacoma which was sent over to Madrid in order to be valued by the Junta Suprema (the Supreme Board) in 1802. In any case, it would be a copy of the copy of the work credited to Reni, which is also housed in the Museum of the Academy (no. inv. 155) and which is attributed to Pau Montanya.
Restaurations: Restored by J.M. Xarrié in 1980
Note: The original of this work is in the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica in Rome and was formerly ascribed to Guido Reni.|
