Signed: "á su amigo/ M.Vilar/ F.de Madrazo/ Rome 1842” (lower right). Inscribed: On back of canvas, on label of the Museu d’Art Modern de Barcelona: "10109". Provenance: Vilar bequeathed this work to the Academy in his will (dated November 24th 1860) (Monero 1969, p. 225). Came to the Academy's Museum: July 29th 1868. Presented by the painter Pelegrí Clavé acting as Vilar's executor. Restaurations: restored by Balaguer i Grau workshop in 1999 Exhibitions: Barcelona, Exposición de retratos y dibujos antiguos y modernos, 1910, sala XIII, núm. 25; Pamplona-Vitoria-Bilbao-Madrid, RACBASJ. Exposición antológica de pintura, 2000, no. 43. Note: The paintwork was deposited in the Museums of Art in Barcelona (no inventory MNAC 10109). Was return in November 17, 1980.the portrayed, the sculptor Manuel Vilar i Roca (Barcelona, 1812 - Mexico, 1860), was a disciple of Damià Campeny and Antonio Sola, and received the advice of Thorwaldsen. He lived in Rome from 1833 to and 1845. Contracted by the Academy of San Carlos in Mexico, he renews his formal studies of art in this country with Pelegrí Clavé.
